Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - Southeastern Asia,
islands between Malaysia and Indonesia. Founded as a British
trading colony in 1819, Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963, but
withdrew two years later and became independent. |
| What to wear - The dress code
in Singapore is generally casual with businessmen regularly
wearing short-sleeved shirts often without a tie, although business
suits are expected at first meetings, in the legal sector and
for some restaurants. |
| Local customs - When visiting
a mosque or temple appropriate clothing should be worn as a
sign of respect. All the island's main religions (Islam, Buddhism,
Toaism, Hinduism and Sikh) request the removal of shoes before
entering, Sikh temples prefer the head covered whilst mosques
require both men and women to cover their arms and legs. |
| Tipping - Is not usual in Singapore,
although it is becoming more prevalent. The more expensive restaurants
and hotels add a ten per cent service charge and may actively
discourage any additional gratuity, but if none is added, leave
ten per cent. |
