Location & Tips For Travelers
|
|
Location - New York City is comprised of five
boroughs, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhatten, Queens and
Staten Island, linked by a series of bridges and tunnels.
Streets in Manhatten, an island only 13.4 miles long
and 2.3 miles wide run east and west and ascend in
numerical order going north. Therefore, traffic is
one way going east on even-numbered streets, one way
going west on odd numbered streets.
|
| New York weather and climate
- The weather in New York goes from one extreme
to the other. In the summer the temperatures can become
almost unbearably hot and humid, whereas in the winter
it is often bitterly cold, with considerable amounts
of snow. Travellers are always advised to check the
New York weather forecast before travelling to the city. |
| Getting around New York
- On arrival in Manhattan, the best thing to do with
your car is to park it in a garage and leave it there.
The garage costs are likely to be upwards of 25 USD
a day but this is favorable to driving in Manhattan.
The subway is by far the easiest method of getting around.
However, the map and train system is quite different
to other major cities. There are no line numbers but
rather they use letters and/or numbers for each train.
That number or letter which is also color-coded will
then follow a set route. Once acquainted with, the subway
is very reasonable at 1.50 USD for any length of trip
with Metro cards for multiple trips available at all
stations. |
|
When to visit - New York City can boast an
artistic representation second to no other city on
earth and its renowned centers for the arts have become
tourist attractions in their own right. Along with
London's West End, Broadway is a prime district for
theatre. There are around 250 legitimate theaters
in New York, not to mention the countless ad hoc venues.
|
| What to wear - Business
suits are expected with a slightly more relaxed focus
on Fridays. Generally, smart casual is recommended for
all forms of social engagement in New York with the
exception of some restaurants where formal attire is
required. As the weather is cold in the winter and hot
in the summer, visitors are reminded to come suitably
equipped. Hats, gloves and scarves and snow proof footwear
can be essential. |
| Tipping - The standard
is 15% to 20 % in restaurants. Usually city residents
leave tips depending on where they eat. For other places,
$1 for the bartender per round, $1 to hotel porters
and doorpeople if they are hailing a cab for you. |
