Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - Miami,
located next to the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay
near the southeastern tip of Florida, has a hugely diverse
population of 2 million people split among 26 municipalities.
Some of the most popular spots for lovers of swaying
palm trees and gently breaking waves are downtown Miami
itself, with its distinctive skyline and waterfront
parks. |
| Miami weather and climate
- Between December and March, Miami's winter months,
expect temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit
(13-25 degrees Celsius) on average. Outside these months
the climate varies only slightly; temperatures ranging
from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (25 to 30 degrees Celsius),
with high humidity and frequent ocean winds. |
| Getting around Miami -
The best way to get around the Miami area is by
car and a number of the rental firms offer hourly as
well as daily and weekly rates. To avoid getting trapped
in traffic congestion in the downtown area there is
the 'Metromover'. Part bus, monorail and train, it comprises
a couple of computer-controlled carriages that run on
an elevated track and offers great views of central
Miami. |
|
When to visit - Miami is a city that loves
festivals with the nine-day 'Carnaval Miami' at the
beginning of March being the largest. There are smaller
festival celebrations and contests going on throughout
the Carnaval period, including concerts at the Orange
Bowl, the 'Miss Carnaval' contest and the 'Calle Ocho'
cooking competition in Little Havana. From the end
of May through to the middle of June, The International
Hispanic Theater Festival presents productions by
theater companies from all over Latin America, the
Caribbean and Europe.
|
| What to wear - In
Miami, business dress is relatively informal, but generally
suits are expected for both men and women. Outside business,
casual clothes are acceptable in most situations with
the exception of some restaurants and hotel lounges.
Choose your clothing carefully, however; Miami's climate
can be very hot. |
| Tipping - The standard
is 15% to 20 % in restaurants. Usually city residents
leave tips depending on where they eat. For other places,
$1 for the bartender per round, $1 to hotel porters
and doorpeople if they are hailing a cab for you. |
