Philip III had built this impressive
square between 1617 and 1619, to give additional prestige to
his kingdom. The buildings are mostly Renaissance style, in
the center there is a statue of the king by Juan de Bolonia
and Pietro Tacca.
During 17th century this square was the scenery of theater performances
and bullfights and served as meeting places. |

called the Parque del Buen Retiro, or "pleasant retreat," and
today covering approximately 350 acres (142 hectares), it was
planned in the 1550s and redesigned on the instructions of Gaspar
de Guzmán, Conde-Duque de Olivares (chief minister to King Philip.
Here you may have relaxing walks or do some boating on its central
lake. The most interesting buildings are the Crystal Palace
and the Velazquez Palace. |

The southern end of the Avenue of Art is occupied by the museum
which proudly carries the name of the presente-day Queen of
Spain: the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía National Museum. Its permanent
collection was inaugurated by their Majesties on 10th September
1992, although it was founded as a center dedicated primarily
to temporary exhibitions in 1986. The Reina Sofía is, because
of its unique characteristics and multiple activities, more
than a museum. |

T he Casa de la Moneda Museum (MCM) is housed within the spacious
premises of Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre (FNMT) and its
collections reflect both the history of Money and the different
ways in which it is produced. The museum has important collections
of coins, medals, models, blanks, machinery and minting tools
, banknotes, postage stamps, along with plates for the stamping
of banknotes and postage stamps, lottery and stamped paper.
The range of the museum's collections is completed with a major
engraving and drawing section, together with an interesting
historical library with books from the sixteenth to nineteenth
centuries. |

The Prado Museum - Important painters of world art such as
El Greco, Ribera, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo, Goya, Van
der Weyden, Hieronymous Bosch, Titian and Rubens are represented
in the collection of the Prado Museum, widely considered one
of the world's richest far the quality and variety of its
paintings. Isabel de Braganza, the wife of Fernando VII, was
the patron of the museum and is commemorated by a statue by
Álvarez Cubero exhibited within the Prado.
