Airport
Terminal and Flight Information Barajas International Airport
- Madrid is Spain's biggest international transport hub,
so it's easy to reach by air from just about anywhere. The
ever-expanding and always-busy Barajas airport is 13km north-east
of the city. There aren't too many great discount ticket centres
in the city, but you can occasionally dig up cheap deals to
the main European capitals.

| Madrid
Transit System - Madrid's Metro system is cheap, extensive
and efficient. Metro stations are indicated by the red, blue
and white icon shown here. The metro is made up of ten lines
and covers most of the city. |
| Observatorio
Astronomico Nacional of Spain - operates optical and
radio telescopes in Spain. Astronomers conduct research in star
formation and evolution, ISM, galaxies, and VLBI. |

Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - The capital
of Spain since 1562, is located on the geographic center
of the Iberian Peninsula. Because of its central location
and high altitude, the climate of Madrid is characterized
by warm dry summers and cool winters. Madrid is a city
of great monuments. |
| Madrid weather and climate
- Madrid's geographical location, near a mountain
range, produces a more extreme climate than in other Spanish
cities. October are the best times to be in Madrid. The
weather generally agreeable, the city has a feel to it
and it isn't too overrun with tourists. If you love to
party, visit during May for Madrid's biggest fiesta. Expect
summers to be warm with temperatures reaching 32 degrees
Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit). |
| What to wear - The dress
code is relatively standard and for those on business
in the city suits are the norm. Visitors who wish to simply
to relax should choose casual clothes. This is acceptable
in most situations with the exception of some restaurants
and hotel lounges. |
| Greeting someone - Spaniards
are conservative, expecting business cards, personal meetings
(rather than telephone or fax communication) and comparitively
formal relations. Shake hands at both the beginning and
end of meetings, and use an appropriate greeting; remember
that Spain is European and for this reason business conduct
is more similar to the Italian or French custom than that
of Latin America |
| Tipping - Tipping isn't
obligatory in Spain though a gratuity can be paid in acknowledgement
of good service, at your own discretion. Bear in mind
that waiters, taxi-drivers, and other people in service
industries are not well paid, and do appreciate receiving
a tip. |
