The
Clock Tower outside the Palace of Westminster is commonly referred
to as Big Ben. What most people don't know about Big Ben is that
the real Ben is actually the bell inside the tower, not the tower
itself. The Palace of Westminster contains the Houses of Parliament. |

1837 and evolved from a town house that was owned, from the beginning
of the eighteenth century, by the Dukes of Buckingham. |

Bentley Old Vicarage Nature Reserve is a small wwodland
reserve in Harrow, in the north west suburbs of London.
(go to How to find it...) Where the reserve is now was the
vicarage of All Saints Church, built along with the church
itself in 1848. The vicarage fell out of use in 1924 and
was finally demolished in 1955. A few of the trees you see
now are relicts of the vicarage garden while most have grown
up since that time. |

In
the heart of London, the north side of Regent's Park,
is London Zoo.The Zoo opened in 1828housed a collection
of exotic animals that were studied by scientists of the
day. Only later, in 1847, did the Zoo open its doors to
the public, and, from then on it became the most famous
zoo in the world.

The Chelsea Physic Garden was founded in 1673, as the Apothecaries'
Garden, with the purpose of training apprentices in identifying
plants, it occupied a small plot. The location was chosen
as the proximity to the river created a warmer microclimate
allowed the survival of many non-native plants, such as
the first olive tree, to be established in England, and
more importantly, to survive harsh British winters. |
