Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location -
Las Vegas is situated in the southern part of the state of
Nevada, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of the California
border and 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of the Arizona border.
Las Vegas is divided into two main parts: a compact downtown
called Glitter Gulch, centered on the intersection of Highway
95 and Interstate 15; and the Strip, a corridor of hotels
and casinos lining I-15 a few miles south of downtown. |
|
Las Vegas weather and climate - As Las Vegas lies
at the convergence of three deserts it has an annual average
of 294 days of sunshine with only four inches of rain. Although
the temperature between May and September can be close to
100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), humidity rarely
exceeds 20 percent and evening temperatures usually drop
to around 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius).

|
Getting around Las Vegas - All major hotels provide
transport to and from the airport or, for that real Vegas
experience, hire a limousine; you'll find more here per
capita than in any other city in the world. Traveling by
car also provides an ideal opportunity to drive through
the desert, all major car rental companies are based here.
City buses travel via the Strip into downtown and a cheap
shuttle bus runs between the major casinos and hotels 24
hours a day.
|
| When to visit
- A city of events and entertainments, Vegas has much
in the way of culture to interest the visitor. As well as
the famous casino cabarets and shows, most major rock and
pop artists will stop at Las Vegas during a tour of the United
States. The city is often the venue for high profile boxing
matches and hosts the event in true flamboyant style. |
| Dress Code
- Business dress in Nevada is formal for both men and women
but tailored to suit the warm climate. Still, if in doubt,
it is advisible to dress formally for meetings unless invited
to do otherwise by the host. |
|
Tipping - The standard is 15% to 20% in restaurants.
Usually city residents leave tips depending on where they
eat. For other places, $1 for the bartender per round, $1
to hotel porters and doorpeople if they are hailing a cab
for you.
