Airport
Terminal and Flight Information Dulles International Airport (IAD)
- Built to accommodate up to six million passengers a year,
Washington Dulles International Airport was one of the most modern
airports in the world in 1962. As the number of passengers increased,
the airport had to grow as well. Midfield Concourses C and D,
five cargo buildings, a hotel located on airport property, and
economy parking lots were also added through the 1980's. The Main
Terminal was expanded in accordance with the original Saarinen
design in 1996. In 1998, the first permanent concourse was completed
and a concourse for regional aircraft opened in 1999.

Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - The capitol city
of the United States of America, Washington is situated in
the District of Columbia, a mass of land flanked by the state
of Maryland. Washington, DC, of course, is America's political
heartland, home to The White House, Congress and The Pentagon.
These powerful political buildings and the history associated
with them are the main reasons that Washington welcomes over
20 million visitors every year. |
| Washington D.C. weather and climate
- Summer in Washington D.C. (June to August) is usual
warm and humid, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 86 degrees
Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius). There is usually snow for

but during these seasons the city is also at its busiest.
|
| Getting around Washington D.C.
- Although the layout of the city's roads makes the navigation
of Washington, DC pretty straightforward, traffic is a big
issue in the downtown and surrounding areas. In general, if
the visitor can avoid bringing a car into the city then that
would be the best option as the public transport network is
reliable, inexpensive and efficient. The Metro is a capable
and comfortable system, consisting of a subway and buses,
which operates throughout the city to remove the need to drive.

| When to visit - Washington
D.C. has a wealth of festivals and commemorative events throughout
the year, beginning on the third Monday in January with Martin
Luther King Junior's birthday remembrance celebration at the
Lincoln Memorial. Other highlights include the Smithsonian
Kite Festival and the famous Cherry Blossom Festival in March
and the First Lady's 'White House Easter Egg Roll' each Easter
Sunday. In June, the Smithsonian hosts the Festival of American
Folk Life whilst Independence Day is celebrated with a parade
and a fantastic firework display. September sees the city's
DC Blues Festival and New Year is celebrated with a huge outdoor
party on Pennsylvania Avenue. |
| What to wear - Business dress
has become more informal especially on Fridays, but generally
suits are expected for both men and women. Outside business,
casual clothes are acceptable in most situations with the
exception of some restaurants and hotel lounges. |
| Tipping - The standard is
15% to 20 % in restaurants. Usually city residents leave tips
depending on where they eat. For other places, $1 for the
bartender per round, $1 to hotel porters and doorpeople if
they are hailing a cab for you. |
