Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - Dallas was settled
in 1841 as a frontier trading post and today is the ninth largest
city in the United States. The population is 1,052,000 and growing,
while the entire Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex comprises a population
of 3,047,460. The city of Dallas encompasses 384 square miles
of rolling prairie, with native pecan, cottonwoods and oak trees
located along the Trinity River and the numerous creeks that
feed it. |
| Dallas weather and climate
- The weather tends to be generally warm throughout the year
and ranges from 33 degrees Fahrenheit (0 Celsius) to 67 degrees
Fahrenheit (19 Celsius) during the winter. The area can be prone
to severe weather, as Dallas is set in the cross-over between
'tornado alley' and the Gulf Coast, so rainfall (heaviest during
spring) is often accompanied by lightning storms and occasionally
hail, floods and tornados. Summer temperatures range from 70
degrees Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) to 97 degrees Fahrenheit (36
Celsius) so care should be taken when it's particularly hot. |
| Getting around Dallas - As
Dallas is a very large city that covers several miles, a car
is recommended for exploring. There are also several outlying
districts worth seeing. The road connections are first class.
However, there is also a good, reliable public transport system
run by Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). DART operate a bus
service covering twelve suburbs and a light rail system. |
| When to visit - The Texas State
Fair runs from the end of September to end of October. Dating
from 1886, it first attracted around 14,000 visitors; nowadays,
crowds numbering three and a half million, attend each year.
It is a traditional State Fair mix of what's new and what's
best, barbecues, a rodeo and the Texan Star ferris wheel; a
place for Texans to see and be seen. |
| What to wear - Business dress
has become more informal especially on Fridays, but generally
suits are expected to be worn by both men and women. Casual
clothes are fine for everyday wear, with the exception of some
restaurants and hotel lounges. |
| Tipping - The standard is
15% to 20% in restaurants. Usually city residents leave tips
depending on where they eat. For other places, $1 for the bartender
per round, $1 to hotel porters and doorpeople if they are hailing
a cab for you. |
