Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - Capital of Massachusetts
and the in the heart of New England, Boston is on a small
peninsula in the middle of Massachusetts' Atlantic Coast,
a little over 200 miles (320 km) northeast of New York City.
Most of the city's sights are contained in less than 5 square
miles (8 sq km). Cambridge (home of Harvard and MIT) is a
short drive or subway ride north across the Charles River.
|
| Boston weather and climate - The
seasonal change from summer to fall can produce spectacular
walls of color throughout the whole of New England. These
are invariably replaced in the winter by blankets of snow.
Spring is generally pleasant with temperatures rising steadily
making Boston summers warm and sunny.
|
|
When to visit - Boston hosts a vast array of festivals
and fairs throughout the year. The Marshfield Annual Fair
is one of the largest and longest agricultural fairs of
the summer, whilst the Clam Chowder Festival and the Boston
Marathon are both events worth experiencing. On the music
front, Harborlights is the venue for a wide variety of musical
concerts from Jazz to Motown.
|
| Getting around Boston - The
travel time between the airport and downtown Boston takes
approximately 15 minutes. Fares are charged at a flat rate,
plus 1.50 USD airport surcharge and a toll of 3 USD, if travel
through the harbor tunnels is necessary. Many of the major
hotels also offer a shuttle service to and from the airport,
with an approximate fare of 7.50 USD. Buses, trains and the
subway are easy to use and are a cost-effective choice for
the downtown journey.
|
| What to wear - For business
meetings, both men and women wear business suits. The more
exclusive bars and restaurants may also stipulate a shirt
and tie, although smart, casual attire is more usual in Boston.
In the winter, be sure to bring a warm overcoat, scarf and
gloves, as well as water-resistant boots or shoes with a good
grip, as the streets can become very wet and slippery.
|
| Tipping - The standard is
15% to 20 % in restaurants. Usually city residents leave tips
depending on where they eat. For other places, $1 for the
bartender per round, $1 to hotel porters
