Chaoyang
District and Park
|
| A beautiful park that is being touted
as the next people-watching hang out to rival Sanlitun. Bars, pubs,
restaurants and shops have all taken residence here. Buy freshly
baked bread from Bella's and then scoot next door to Jenny Lou's
to do a little bit of grocery shopping. Cap off the day by heading
over to the Big Easy for some spicy Cajun and live blues. The district
probably the most concentrated commercial and residential area in
Beijing, Chaoyang has most areas of interest for the visitor. Within
this district are Chaoyang Park, Sanlitun, and the Jianguomen and
Ritan area (business/embassy district). |

The
Great Wall of China
|
Without a doubt, the Great Wall is amazing. Seen from a distance,
the Wall is an awesome spectacle, snaking endlessly with no apparent
end in sight. In actuality, the Wall stretches from Shanhaiguan
Pass in the east to the Jiayuguan Pass in the Gobi Desert. Originally
built 2000 years ago in the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC), it was designed
to keep foreign invaders out. Unfortunately, it didn't do a very
good job of keeping out invaders. However, it was useful as a
highway, transporting people and supplies. Constructed with beacon
towers, it also served as an enemy alert system by using smoke
systems to communicate the encroachment of enemies. During the
Ming Dynasty, an attempt was made to refurbish the Wall which
took hundreds of years to complete.

Hu
Dong Shui
|
Address: Huang Song Yu, Ping Gu
County Beijing, China 101201
Tel: 86-10-609-8154
The name of this scenic valley translates simply as "lakes, caves
and water", an appropriate title for the six kilometer stretch
of natural landscape in Beijing's Ping Gu County. Popular caves include
the Nian Nian series, set high in rocky cliffs, and the intriguing
Echo cave, where words spoken in other caverns far away can be distinctly
heard. The area is cool in summer, so makes a popular retreat for
Beijingers during the hotter months. |

artist and Communist, Xu Bei Hong. During the early days of the
Chinese Communist Party, Xu Bei Hong decided to break from the art
community and become a full-fledged party member, thus ensuring
himself an opportunity to paint in future years. He is most recognised
for his inked galloping horses, copies of which are frequently seen
hanging in government offices around Beijing. Prints of Xu's work
and literature about his work, life, and dedication to the Communist
Party can be purchased from the museum gift shop.

Ji
Gu Ge Art Gallery
|
|
Address: 136 Wen Hua Avenue, Liu Li Chang, Xuan Wu District
Beijing, China 100056
Tel: 86-10-630-7846
With modern art beginning to dominate the Beijing art scene, it
is reassuring that the Ji Gu Ge Gallery has decided to take a more
traditional approach to Chinese art. With a large selection of beautiful,
traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy, it is a nice place
to stop and see what artists were doing long, long ago. Although
small, the gallery has a surprisingly large number of works within
its vaults. Even though you most likely won't be familiar with the
artists, you can still call to ask whose works are presently being
exhibited.
