Terminal and Flight Information - Beijing Capital Airport PEK
- The Beijing Capital International Airport terminal officially
opened on October 1, 1999, marking the 50th anniversary of Chinese
Communist rule. This new, bright and airy terminal, built at a cost
of $1.1 billion, is a welcome replacement for the former facility,
which started operating in the 1950s, and has become increasingly
cramped and dingy with the rise in the number of passengers visiting
China. |

| Beihai
Park - On the west side of the Forbidden City is a wide
expanse of water called Tai Ye Chi. Tai Ye Chi is divided into three

Nanhai Lake in the south. Beihai, the best known of the three, was
turned into a royal garden as early as 1,000 years ago. |

Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - Beijing is located
on the west coast of Pacific, Beijing stands at the northern tip
of North China Plain. Tian'anmen Square in the cnter of Beijing
is situated at 39O56' North Latitude and 116O20' East Longitude.
Beijing is surrounded by the Yanshan Mountains on the west, north
and east while the small alluvial plain of the Yongding River lies
to its southeast. Beijing stands on this terrain and faces the Bohai
Sea, which is also called the Beijing Bay. |
| Beijing weather and climate - The
climate in Beijing is one of extremes, often with very hot summer
days whilst in winter the temperature can drop considerably. Autumn
is the best time to visit when the weather is sunny and warm and
fewer tourists crowd the attractions. |
| Visiting manners - It is a good
idea to take a large quantity of business cards with you, and it
is wise to have the inscription translated into Chinese and printed
on the reverse side of the card. When you are introduced to a local
take out your card, bow slightly and present it with both hands.
They will probably reciprocate in a similar manner most likely holding
their card anglicised version uppermost. |
| What to wear - If visiting on business,
then smart clothing is definitely a must, suits, ties etc. It is
advisable not to wear anything too revealing, which might offend.
When not conducting business, conservative casual wear tends to
be acceptable. Remember that if you visit in the winter months it
can become very cold. In contrast the summers can become pretty
steamy, so pack accordingly. |
| Tipping - Tipping used to be very
rare in China but now, through western influence, the idea is catching
on. In restaurants a three percent tip is standard, bellboys and
room service staff expect roughly one or two USD. You can tip in
USD, as hard currency is always appreciated. |
