Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - The capital city
of Thailand, Bangkok (the city of angels), is a harmonious blend
of east and west that manages to retain its unique cultural
and traditional identity. With a massive population of ten million,
the city can be alarmingly chaotic but this is more than compensated
for by the charm and friendliness of the Thai people. |
| Bangkok weather and climate
- Bangkok can be hot and humid throughout the year with temperatures
often reaching 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). The
best time to visit is between November and February as April
is generally the hottest month and October the wettest. |
| Getting around Bangkok - For
traveling around Bangkok center, choose either standard air-conditioned
taxis or tuk-tuk's, fast-moving three-wheeled open taxis, rather
than opting to drive through the busy streets. Water taxis are
a fun way to travel up the main Chao Phraya River. |
| What to wear - Due to the sometimes
high heat and humidity levels in Bangkok, casual clothes, preferably
made from natural fibres that provide plenty of air circulation,
are recommended. Businessmen, for example, commonly wear a short-sleeved
shirt, with or without a tie. |
| Money/Currency - The Thai baht
is made up of 100 satangs. Notes come in the following denominations:
10 (brown), 20 (green); 50 (blue); 100 (red); 500 (purple);
and 1,000 (gray). Ten-baht coins are brass disks in a nickel
ring; five and one baht coins are nickel. |
| Visiting manners - People should
be met with a handshake, followed by exchanging business cards.
Ensure that you look at the business card before putting it
away, as this is good manners. Punctuality is essential for
business and social meetings. |
| Tipping - Tipping is not customary
in Thailand, although Thais are getting used to the idea in
upmarket hotels where a service charge is often added. |
