Location & Tips For Travelers
Location - The capital of Georgia and seat of Fulton County, Atlanta is the premier transportation, commercial, and financial center in the Southeast. As of 1992, Atlanta was ranked as the 13th largest metropolitan area in the United States, with a total population of 3,142,857. Atlanta is located in north central Georgia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Atlanta weather and climate - Atlanta's climate is mild throughout the year though with some chance of snow in December and January. High temperatures and humidity in the summer months are common, so spring and fall are the best times to visit the city.
Getting around Atlanta - Traffic can often be congested in the city centre. The best alternative to driving in Atlanta is the excellent MARTA system; an effective method of getting around with free transfers to the bus system, where appropriate.
When to visit - There are many local festivals and parades during the year such as King Week, where Martin Luther King Jr's life and work is commemorated culminating on his birthday, 15 January. The other big occasion in the Atlanta calendar is the Antebellum Jubilee where the cities Dixie past is celebrated.
What to wear - Casual dress is acceptable in most venues in Atlanta, but some of the better restaurants may require a jacket and tie. During summer months the temperature and humidity can be high and natural fabrics are ideal, but excessive air-conditioning in most offices and public places may require a thin sweater or jacket. For winter, a sweater and light overcoat should be enough; and for autumn and spring, a combination of summer and winter clothing.
Tipping - The standard is 15% to 20 % in restaurants. Usually city residents leave tips depending on where they eat. For other places, $1 for the bartender per round, $1 to hotel porters and doorpeople if they are hailing a cab for you.
