| "I
eat next to nothing, honestly" - Must be something from my
childhood. Just being sociable, that's all. Also, after we've finished
the week's shopping, my daughter and I have this habit of drinking
a cup of coffee |

Airport
Terminal and Flight Information - Schiphol Airport - Schipol
is arguably the most important transportation hub in Europe. There
is a train station below the airport, so once you are through the
arrival hall and into the main part of the airport, you can go down
a ramp and be on the train platform. Schipol is is a modern, well
designed airport. It was built between Amstelveen and Hoofdorp,
but is like a city unto itself. There is really an amazing variety

Location & Tips For Travelers
|
| Location - Amsterdam the
capital and cultural center of the Netherlands. Center of European
cultural life since the 17th century, and today it boasts more
than 40 museums. It is the capital and the principal commercial
and financial centre of The Netherlands. |
| Amsterdam weather and climate
- The weather in Holland is generally mild, rarely dropping
below freezing in the winter or becoming too hot in the summer.
On the whole it combines this mildness with a certain dampness. |
| When to visit - The Netherlands
has more art treaures per square mile than any other country
on earth. Its museums are home to the world's richest and most
comprehensive collection of of art masterpieces from the 15th
to the 20th centuries. Amsterdam also has many performance halls
that play host to music, dance and the famous performing arts
festivals. |
| Getting around Amsterdam -
Once in the city, the local public transport system in Amsterdam
is cheap and a good way of getting around. Tickets covering
bus, tram and metro journeys can be bought from automatic dispensers
on the metro, bus and tram drivers and newsstands. The layout
of the city makes sightseeing on foot quite easy, with most
of the museums situated close together. Canal cruises provide
a relaxing and unique view of the old town and its impressive
buildings whilst the 'Museum Boat' offers a shuttle service
linking twenty museums and sightseeing attractions. For longer
excursions there are water taxis, trams or the ubiquitous bicycle
(550,000 at the latest count). |
| What to wear - Generally, smart
casual is recommended for all forms of social engagement in
Amsterdam as even the more expensive restaurants in the city
tend to be without a formal dress code and will admit the casually
attired without any fuss. For business, however, both men and
women will be expected to wear suits. |
| Visiting manners - As a general
rule the accepted form of greeting is the handshake. In business,
the Dutch tend to expect you to address them by their titles
and last names, unless they invite you to do otherwise. Outside
business, people are less formal and usually address each other
by their first names. |
| Tipping - A service charge is
generally included in restaurant prices and taxi fares, but
it is usual to round the total up to the nearest Euro plus 10%
for good service. Porters, doormen and room service in Amsterdam
hotels will expect a small tip for their services. |
